Minimal, sphere shapes alluding to celestial bodies and referencing the traditional forms of moon jars emerge as a studio series. The process of ceramics naturally relates themes of earthen and universal elements with the harness of centrifugal force and fire. References to the cosmos are found often in my works, in painting and clay. These Moon Vessels became a place to adventure in dimensional conversations with subtle silhouette transitions, shadows and shapes. Different from a canvas, a clay object beckons to be touched. Once the piece is formed, it’s treated as a round painting. Slip transfers, brushwork and underglaze pencil layer and scribe throughout the surface to further push the feeling of space and energy. The works, like the moon, grant a place of comfort and reflection.
Siren Series
This developing series draws from oceanic currents and the feminine swoops that pull through the water. Notes of human industry and connectivity with chains and buoyant forms are layered in concept. Resulting sculptures become almost figurative with the links woven, hung and draped like jewelry. The surface is mysterious and tactile like a corroded object within a marine world, long submerged.
